The extreme heat and humidity stopped for awhile and the skies opened dumping inches of needed rain. Look around and shrubs have new growth that needs trimming, grass is growing once again, and birds are happy. And children head back to school this month. Please watch for children going to and from school. Slow down. Look below for more on speeding. Let’s enjoy this last full month of summer.

August 4 to 7, Thursday to Sunday, Ballet Under the Stars at Woodland Park. Pre-show youth production at 8 pm and the main show which features professional dancers from the Ky Ballet Theatre starts at 9:15. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. You can bring a picnic dinner or buy concessions onsite. Cost is $8 per person and children 3 and under are free.

August 10, Wednesday, Fayette County Pubic Schools first day of classes!

Aug 12 and Aug 26 Summer Nights in Suburbia. Open-air concert at Moondance Amphitheater in Beaumont. Bring blanket or lawn chairs. Food trucks onsite. 7 to 9 pm.

Aug 13, Saturday, Intro to Canoeing, 10 am to noon. Learn the basics of piloting a canoe on calm waters of Jacobson Park Lake. Cost $5. Call 859-288-2900.

August 14, Sunday, Wildflower Walk, 2 to 3 pm at McConnell Springs. Free guided walk to observe and learn about wildflowers currently blooming.

August 20 and 21, Saturday and Sunday, Woodland Art Fair at Woodland Park. For more than 40 years artists have gathered at Woodland Park to sell their work. More than 160 artists will offer unique, handcrafted items including ceramics, wood, jewelry, painting, metal, fiber, mixed media, and photography. Live entertainment, food trucks, local breweries and vineyards!

August 28, Sunday, Tree I.D. Walk at McConnell Springs from 2 to 3pm. Free guided walk at a leisurely pace. Learn to identify trees by leaves, bark, thorns, seeds, and other characteristics.
